What is STEAM?
STEAM is the integrated and applied approach of five disciplines – Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics.
Why is STEAM so important?
There can be no doubt that STEAM is an ever-growing interdisciplinary field; simply take a quick glance at the news and you will see astonishing developments in Engineering, Technology and Medicine on a daily basis, as well as great strides that are being made in conservation and the protection of our planet and the exploration of others.
With a growth in STEM, we also see a growth in STEAM-related jobs. It is therefore essential that STEAM activities are incorporated into a child’s education in order to equip them for jobs of the future, many of which do not even exist today. This interdisciplinary approach develops innovation, and prepares individuals to meet the changes and challenges that are encountered in our fast-paced and rapidly developing world. The main focus of STEAM is not the learning of new content, but instead STEAM activities involving real-world applications, which require critical thinking and problem-solving, essential skills of a 21st century learner.
STEAM at Harrow Hong Kong
STEAM activities are the perfect way to fulfil the School’s mission statement ‘Educational Excellence for Life and Leadership’. There is a wide range of STEAM activities offered at Harrow Hong Kong, which incorporates all five disciplines equipping pupils with the skills required to improve lives through science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics. By actively taking part in STEAM activities, pupils learn to integrate and apply their knowledge across different subjects. They are encouraged to consider ways in which they can solve some of life’s problems with practical solutions and innovative designs.
STEAM activities are available to pupils in both Prep and Senior School and it is highly encouraged that pupils select at least one STEAM SCA or CCA activity within an academic year.
