Year 10 pupil Brynn helped put Hong Kong on the map at the recent World Irish Dancing Association (WIDA) International and World Championships in Maastricht, the Netherlands.
The Wu House pupil was inspired to take up Irish Dancing two and a half years ago upon watching Riverdance, and her training and efforts paid off at the recent Championships when she returned with two firsts, a second and two third places from her individual dances in the International section.
She also contributed to team success, picking up five more medals with her Echoes of Erin dance school for team dances in the World Championships.
The four-day event welcomed competitive dancers from Belarus, England, Germany, Ireland, Isle of Man, Kazakhstan, Netherlands, Russia, Scotland and USA in addition to Hong Kong.
Brynn practices twice per week, and participates in around 15-20 performances per year, including the St. Patrick’s Day Parade, and school fairs in Hong Kong, Macau and China.
“It’s so much fun, and I’ve made so many friends,” she explained. “There’s also so much variety and fitness involved. The soft shoe dances are incredibly balletic and pretty, whereas the hard shoe dances are much more rhythmic.”
“My results at the Championships will allow me to dance most of my dances at the intermediate level for the first time,” said Brynn of the recent event.
“My school did very well. We danced for four days in individual and group competitions, supporting each other the whole time. The competition was fierce and there were some really great dancers. I think we learned a lot watching others and participating in the team dances.
“I hope to compete in the World Championship traditional dance heat next year.”
