How do you choose from a myriad of career paths open to you?
You call on expert insight and advice from industry leaders and professionals, which is exactly what Harrow Hong Kong’s Year 10-13 pupils did at the School’s fifth annual Careers Fair (28 February).
The Friends of Harrow Education Enhancement Committee, in conjunction with the School, brought together a wide range of 58 panellists spanning 22 industry sectors for the pupils to interact with and ask questions of.
The room was filled to capacity with curious pupils and professionals keen to pass on their career experiences, with pupils able to target panellists based on their own interests and on their Facing Challenges career guidance discussions within their Houses.
A distinctive trait identified amongst the professional panellists was adaptability, evidenced by the pursuit of multiple careers. Some have stayed focused on a single area, while others have changed fields once or several times in their professional lives. Having a high quality and broad educational foundation, key tenets of a Harrow Hong Kong education, was lauded as helpful in providing the resilience and flexibility needed in the workplace, whether focusing on one particular area or progressing through several careers after university.
Examples included an investment banker who became a PR strategist; an IT developer who ended up being a serial entrepreneur; a professional in the oil and energy industry moving to IT consulting; and a news producer moving to film making, amongst many more stories.
Over 60% of the Careers Fair panellists were Harrow Hong Kong parents, with a number having returned year on year through their enjoyment of the event.
Friends of Harrow and Harrow Hong Kong are hugely grateful for the generous contributions shown by the panellists, who took time out of their busy professions and lives to meet and share their insights with the pupils.
