Harrow Hong Kong’s environmental efforts have received a top award from the Environmental Campaign Committee and the Education Bureau.
The School received the highest recognition of ‘Excellent’ in the Green Lunch Award category for its environmentally friendly lunchtime practices, with Prefect Ollie (Year 13, Sun) and Mrs Power collecting the prize on behalf of Harrow Hong Kong at an awards ceremony held last week at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.
During a visit by the Environmental Campaign Committee during the latter half of the 2017-18 academic year, a panel of pupils including Ollie, Ryan (Year 13, Churchill) and Ella (Year 12, Gellhorn) presented evidence, answered questions and gave inspectors a tour of the School’s catering and recycling facilities.
The inspection team was particularly impressed by the recycling initiatives with Crossroads Foundation, the recycling all of the School’s cooking oil to make biofuel, the lack of disposable cutlery, crockery and packed lunch containers (thereby reducing single use plastic) and meal portion control (reducing food waste).
With over 900 schools being inspected, this was a tremendous achievement and show of leadership by the Harrow Hong Kong community, which will hopefully inspire others to be more environmentally conscious.
