The Lower School inaugural House Art Event proved to be a vibrant success. Children across the School split into House Groups for the fourth time this year, marking a deliberate development of House Events across the Lower School. House Art is celebrated at Harrow London and was something that we felt we could take and put into our own unique Lower School and Hong Kong context. Each House was given the brief of creating their House Animal using a range of materials. The focus was on teamwork, developing House Spirit and engaging with the Leadership Attributes. The results were extraordinary – it was very encouraging to see what high quality art could be produced by each group in a relatively short space of time. Certificates were given to children who showed true leadership during the activity: looking after and engaging with children younger than themselves, listening to and taking on board others’ ideas, praising and encouraging the efforts of others and fully engaging with the task set with enthusiasm. The final products were put on display by the staff in a celebration assembly. A giant and intricate paper snake, a Salvador Dali inspired Horse, a range of happy oxen, an incredibly creative and colourful paper plate dragon, a tremendous tiger with full jungle background and a beautiful monkey collage made up an incredible array of art. The Year 5 children presented each piece to the School and were articulate and insightful in their explanations. We look forward to more House Art events in the future.
